Last week, I wrote about the reasons why restaurants should have a mobile website. And I posted the link to the blog post on the Restaurant Network LinkedIn group to share my blog and opinion. Typically when I do this, I will get a fair amount of traffic to this blog and occasionally I will get a comment that reiterates what I have stated or thanking me for the post as they got something new out of it. However, as of the writing of this post, there are 23 post. And not all of them agree with me.
Now, I am not a proponent of going after the latest and greatest thing, especially when it comes to technology and marketing (promoting) your business. However, once there is sufficient information and data to establish the “why” you should start to investigate technology into you business, you should pay attention.
In the discussion thread, there has been a lot of discussion agreeing with the fact that restaurants need mobile websites, although a December 2011 study showed that 37% of people use smart phones in a car and 56% are using them at their home.
Also, the use of QR codes and SMS has come up. Now, I will and have conceded that these are not for everyone. However, there are some that are heavily involved in this field and they are discussing the success of their marketing campaigns using QR codes and SMS marketing. I personally know several people that their business is based on this type of marketing and they are very successful.
In conclusion, I was surprised at the response positively and negatively to my post and to the others comments. Discussion and debate is great. However, if in that discussion, you are in denial of what can make your business grow because it seems like the “newest fad”, you could be hurting your own chances for success.
As one person commented on the discussions thread “a lot of people had hard time to leave the pagers behind.”
